Door DIY Ideas, Repurposed Doors - 10 New Uses for Old Doors - Bob Vila
This article describes one of a number of techniques for making an external door frame. Unlike a normal internal frame or door lining, an external frame needs to be of more substantial construction, and for security, needs to have moulded door stops built into the frame, rather than supplementary door stops applied after installation. This design will suit someone with access to basic hand tools and a router. A mortising machine will speed up construction but is not essential. A circular saw or table saw would be handy if making the optional threshold rail.
Instead, you can repurpose them in a variety of ways to create something affordable, functional, and best of all, impressively unique. Many old doors have recessed panels perfect for insetting a mirror. Cut the mirror to size by scoring it with a glass-cutting tool. Simply find a door you like, paint it—or strip or sand it lightly to give it an aged look—then attach legs or a base that suits your style.
When it's time to replace the French door, turn the old door into a picture frame. Use an old French door, mullioned door or glass-paned cabinet door for an original family photo-album picture frame. Distress the door for shabby chic-style decor; paint it a bright, primary-color glossy enamel for a playroom, or apple green with a border of painted yellow and red apples for the kitchen.
