A single poem—a simple combination of well-chosen words—can liberate a young person's soul. It is in this spirit of new beginnings that the To Be Heard Foundation TBH carries forth its mission: to educate youth through heightened literacy. We seek to empower youth as individuals, within their communities, and as social activists through a mastery of reading, writing and expression of poetry. The foundation sponsors the work of two core programs, Power Writers and Power Poetry.
John Fox and Project Avary: Helping Teens Heal Through Poetry
Poetry is Power Teen Institute is the only free poetry and creative writing teen institute aimed at serving young people in the Inland Empire, and specifically in San Bernardino. Over the course of two weeks in June, young people will participate in courses on spoken word, comics poetry, poetic form, and the institute will culminate in a public reading and collaborative performance, in addition to a published anthology. Free, healthy meals and snacks, and writing materials will be provided for all participants. The mentor faculty who will be teaching this summer are award-winning and critically acclaimed poets and authors, in addition to junior faculty who are studying creative writing in local colleges and universities.
A Bear of a Poem: Composing and Performing Found Poetry This lesson helps students recast the text they are reading in a different genre, which in turn, makes students more insightful readers and helps develop creativity in thinking and writing. Acrostic Poems: All About Me and My Favorite Things Students create acrostic poems using their names and the names of things that are important to them. Poetry Portfolios: Using Poetry to Teach Reading Teach your students about sentence structure, rhyming words, sight words, vocabulary, and print concepts using a weekly poem. Writing Acrostic Poems with Thematically Related Texts in the Content Areas Students read thematically related texts, scaffolded from simple to complex, to help them gather necessary concept vocabulary and background knowledge in a content area. They then write acrostic poems to organize and present their learning in a creative way.
